How to practise with the metronome
Choose a tempo with the slider, the plus and minus buttons, the number box or Tap tempo: tap along with a song four or more times and the metronome takes the average. The Italian word under the number, such as Andante or Allegro, is the traditional name for that speed range; treat it as a loose guide, since sources draw the lines a little differently.
The beats per bar and beat note make the time signature. Each circle under the drum is one beat. Activate a circle to cycle it through strong accent (^), accent (>), normal (•) and silent (×). Silencing beats is a good test: if you can keep time through a silent beat, the time is in you and not only in the click.
Subdivision adds quieter clicks inside each beat: eighths, triplets, sixteenths or swing eighths, where the second note of each pair lands on the last third of the beat. The speed trainer adds a few BPM every few bars until it reaches the tempo you set, which is a simple way to build up a fast passage without jumping straight to full speed.
